Guylene Solon: Kora Love #Art4Change

I’m done with Uni for the summer (as you might have guessed by my silence – sowwy). My next project is volunteering in Haiti this summer! It started as a UAL ACS initiative and I’ve pushed it forward with the hashtag #Art4ChangeHaiti… Here’s a video I made interviewing my friend and creative artist Guylene Solon…

When Guylene Solon turned up at my door step a couple of days ago with more than just a suitcase, I knew this would be an opportunity to utilise her talent (of which she has many) in collaboration with #Art4ChangeHaiti. Seeing her Kora (an African harp) carefully unpacked from its durable casing (where Guylene travels, so does her Kora), and standing just as tall and elegantly as its Haitian-American owner, I watch in awe Guylene tune her instrument, like her, of African roots… It didn’t take long before we were out on my terrace filming a short video interview. Thankfully the British weather held up (just about!)

I first met Guylene in LA when we shared a car-pool together from LA to San Diego for “Brazil Day” in 2011. It was she who recommended a contact in Haiti when I wanted to volunteer 2 years ago (check out my experience search “Haiti”). Now to host her for a few days in London before she starts a new chapter of her life in Puglia, Italy teaching arts – is fates way of congratulating me for keeping the connection alive!

p.s – I passed 2nd year!… This time next year I’ll be done with uni! Bring on Final Year!
